Arushi is so many wonderful things, and one of them is PATIENT. To say I have lagged on this guest post is like saying I'm a little obsessed with my hair. Anywayyyys.
Good luck on your exams, doll!
She asked me to write about the defining moments in my life...the defining fashion moments and well, they are one and the same.
I remember the first pair of knee high leather black stiletto boots I ever bought. I was 19, and still trying to find my signature style. I was walking by a random shoe store, saw them in the window...briefly wondered if I could pull them off, immediately thought HELL YES and bought them. I was in my first serious, out of high school relationship with an older guy (25 to my 19) who I am sad to say, I was beyond desperate to impress. These boots did the trick and have been part of my wardrobe staples ever since. Although now I don't wear them to impress post grad douchebags. I wear them because I'm a badass bitch. :) Let's be honest though...when I wear boots like these, there is a little more swagger in my step, a little more shake...a little more confidence in my walk, and if a dude happens to notice, well...good for him.
I was just telling this lil story to the new boy, and while it's not some drastic moment in the fashion history of Liz....the one and only time I got grounded growing up was because of fashion...kinda. It was the end of 7th grade, I believe, and we had a big party at the beach, and you better believe I wanted to wear a bikini. My dad the pastor was not a fan of this idea. So, obviously I left the house wearing a one piece and promptly changed into a white string bikini at my friends house. I remember feeling...weird. I know the poor puberty stricken boys in my class were having a ehem, hard, time averting their eyes from all of us girls in bikinis. Still though, I'm pretty sure I defied my parents and wore that bikini for the girls, not the guys. I couldn't be the only girl in a one piece, it was completely a "On Wednesdays we wear pink" situation...I couldn't have them looking better than me. I guess the girl competition starts early, which is sad but it is what it is.
Other defining moments are all swirled together in my brain...prom dresses, cheer uniforms, bridesmaid dresses I'll never wear again but hold too much sentimental value to throw away, my first pair of Christian Louboutins, True Religions and Havainas on the Santa Monica pier, holding onto my hot skater boys hand, sporting a tan and feeling like I had no cares in the world...the jean jacket from the 80's that I still have and still fits, Guess jeans with the ankle zippers I just had to have, the infamous Juicy Couture sweats that of course had "juicy" emblazoned across the ass, tucked into Ugg boots as I ran errands around L.A, Urth Cafe latte in hand...because Britney was doing it. That's always a logical reason to do anything, no?
While I am in love with fashion, I'm more in love with those who get to know themselves, what works...what doesn't...looking back on my life I want to remember what I wore, how badass I looked, but most importantly, how I felt. If I was smiling, if I was happy...if I had to take of the 5.5inch heels because they were killing and let my handsome fellow give me a piggy back ride down the Vegas strip back to our hotel, laughing the whole way. Those are my defining moments.
And you better believe I'm wearing a little Rick Owens, Balmain or a pair of Loubies, I'll be smiling. So tell me-What are YOUR defining moments in fashion? The good, the bad, and the ones that got you in trouble?
xoxo
Liz

I love your love for clothes and how well you relate them to your life. Clothes are armor and it seems foolish to leave the house in anything less than full armor-the perfect pair of jeans, the heels that make me feel like I'm on top of the world when really I only stand at a meager 5'2 and half inches and of course the doe eyelashes that I'm happy to say are all mine baby.
As for my defining moment in fashion, sixth grade sneaking mascara and washing it off before my mom saw me, fisnets and ballet flats at a 8th grade party, my colorful rule breaking socks and huge hippie bags in place of a back pack(in Catholic High School you do anything to stand out)and then the frist outfit I put on the day after graduating when I woke up and noted that I didn't have to wear a uniform anymore. I swear I almost cried with joy.
Fashion is more about who you are and how you feel in the clothes and all I can say is..."I feel pretty bad ass in this grey sailor dress, ankle boots and "Keys to my Karma" nails. Yes, Elizabeth I'm so thinking of you while I sip my coffee."
When I grow up I want to be a badass like you!!
