GIVEAWAY X2

So this is strange. The winner of the OUFI bag giveaway seems to have fallen off the face of the earth and did not reply to my incessant emails soooo I'm posting the giveaway again to give a chance to somebody else to win it! Also, considering my exams start day after, it'll give me sufficient time to concentrate on world history and will spare you crappy, half hearted posts.

You can check out the last post for giveaway details. Oh, what the heck, I'll repost it.

I've teamed up with OUFI London to give away this gorgeous little bag. It's a great, utilitarian day bag, the military color is rad and the bow in the center adds the final touch of cutesy. It's genuine leather, not pleather, which I don't care what anyone says, always ends up looking tacky and plastic like! It's got tons of handy little pockets and retails for about $100. Now one of you had better snag it and give it a good home!

Here's how:

For one entry: Follow this little bloggy blog on BLOGLOVIN and/or Google Follow/Connect/whatever you call it. Please mention where you follow it in your comment.

For two entries:  Follow me on Twitter so you know what I ate for breakfast et all, because I'm obviously important enough for everyone to care about that. ANYWAY. And tweet about the giveaway!

Alright, and in addition to what's stated above, please visit the OUFI website and tell me what your favorite bag is so I can buy it and spite you, ha.   You can also like/fan Oufi on Facebook, check out their blog and follow them on Twitter to stay updated on their fabulous pieces!

I'm going to announce the randomly picked winner on, let's say, exactly a week to be safe. I'd love to say earlier but I know I won't get to post and I don't want to subject anyone to the kind of torture I conjure up when I'm pissed off with political science. Good luck, you guys!

PS- Yes, this giveaway is open to EVERYONE. US residents and international.

PPS- I just lost my EBAY virginity! Yes, I am a self proclaimed fashion blogger who had NEVER, I'll say it again, NEVER bought a thing from ebay but I just bought those amazing Topshop nude Wisteria boots because freaking Topshop is being a bitch and refusing to ship to India. More on that soon!

PPPS- Camila Picheco, the fabulous fashion illustrator did this adorable illustration of me.Thanks so much, C!

Wearing: Pleasure Doing Business bandage skirt,  The Scarlet Room croc tunic worn shorter , Tt Collection Dylan skinny fit blazer, 1986 gold necklace, United Nude block hi neon pumps.

Wore this outfit yesterday and took a bunch of pictures beforehand.

Confession: I am very slightly OBSESSED with PDB's skirts. This one is awesome and well, as Naina would put it, makes anyone look like Buzz Lightyear. Good times.

I got this shirt from The Scarlet Room and it's got these great python imitation fuchsia sleeve patches that got hidden with this jacket. It's actually much longer but I needed a top and I couldn't find the basic black one I usually use.

No matter how many blazers I may lust after, this one will ALWAYS be my favorite. It's just the perfect fit.

By the way, thanks so much to the fabulous Judith V Hoek  for sketching me here! She's so talented, you guys NEED to visit her blog. Thanks again, J!

More press: Asian Age did an article on me that appeared in the newspaper, still haven't scanned it. You can check out the online version here.
It came in the Deccan Chronicle as well, thanks to all the lovely people who emailed/tweeted me about it and reminded my forgetful ass that it was out!

I have had countless people tell reiterate that London of all cities , undoubtedly has the most amazingly individualistic street style and vintage stores.  I'm not sure if this is true but having stalked the Sartorialist, Facehunter, Garance Dore, Get Your Plain Right on Time, etc. I know for a fact that it's pretty darn amazing. The thing that makes their style stand out is that it's very individualistic. You know how you'll always see lots of sharp cuts and black in New York and embellishments and pops of bright hues in Milan? Everybody is different in London. From hair accessories outerwear to shoes, it's like watching a real life reel of a street style website.I really want to go check out some London vintage shops in the near future.

I've especially heard good things about Notting Hill vintage shops. But I feel you need to walk the city to know it.

Check out my latest sponsors Panama Hats/Fedora Hats in the sidebar. Go ahead and check out their website, they've got some great stuff!

Anyhow, I now have to go and procrastinate and not study for my exams that start in a week for which I have done exactly nothing and instead watch Glee reruns. Phew. I need to learn how to use more punctuation. Bye!

Giveaway time!

I'm SO sorry for being so AWOL. I keep telling myself "today, I'm going to post" and then I'm just so tired after school or my camera's missing or something irksome and stupid like that comes up. I have an entire list of outfits I want to put up but I'm just a lazy asshole and that's that.

So I decided to do a giveaway here!

I'm going to announce the randomly picked winner on Friday. Good luck, you guys!

Wearing: Lall London lollymelt sequin dress, Pleasure Doing Business aqua bandage skirt, Forever New boyfriend blazer, Steve Madden red ruffle heels.

Lall London is a fabulous new British label by designer Gurdeep Lall. I love this updated version of a classic sequined mini dress. The cream silk is gorgeous and the candy hued splattering of turquoise and fuchsia. I put on this PDB skirt underneath just so it doesn't verge on hooker wear when I bend over. Only a peek of the blue shows everytime I move, which I love.

I pre ordered the JC Lita boots via Solestruck  last week. I just really, really needed these in my life.

Let's take a second to talk about this Vogue Italia oil spill shoot issue, yeah? Now, I'm not going to bother posting the pictures here because I'm sure if you all managed to find my crap here, you can find the pictures anywhere online.

Yes, the shoot was a little bit tacky where the time gap it was shot in was concerned. But someone was going to do it first. It just happened to be a renowned European fashion magazine. This little shoot has given way to the shit being blown wide open and people with varied opinions arguing tirelessly. But isn't that the point? Isn't that what art is supposed to achieve? To be provocative and make a statement? To get people to talk? When fashion magazines have happy, good time photoshoots about blonde vixens skipping around in $3000, 5 inch stilettos, engulfed in a permanent aura of perfection, people object saying fashion doesn't inherently make you think. Yes

And as far as I can see, there's hardly any glamorization, is there? The clothes are matted in grime and oil, hardly making them the It pieces of the season and catapulting their sales to oblivion. It also draws interesting comparisons between humans and animals.

Is it tacky to be doing something so soon? Sure, maybe a little. I don't think it glamorizes the oil spill; it's using every tool at the fashion industry's disposal to portray the devastation and ruin and the hurt. Art imitates life. It's hardly effective advertising of their clothes, even, considering they're near unrecognizable, stricken by the oil. Keeping that in mind, I think there's more than just attention grabbing in mind here (though, that of course is part of the deal, it IS a business at the end of the day). Whether it could've been executed or portrayed in a better way is debatable. But that controversy is the case with all art, isn't it?

If it makes even one person think, really THINK about the issue, even if it's out of unabated horror at how insipid they think the fashion industry is (ahem, you know who you are), it's more than just advertising. It's thought provoking and it IS a difference.

A comment I read I agree with to an extent:

"This fashion spread is meant to leave a bad taste in our mouths; we should feel uneasy looking at these images. it is quite simply an example of art imitating life. this is not a "fantasy" shoot with an inappropriate subtext; it is the manifestation of our reality in a fashion spread."

Another interesting tidbit from Anne of Caversville:

"Americans could be pleasantly surprised to get a first-hand visual documentation of just how intellectual fashion can be in Europe vs America.

Instead we shred the Italian Vogue visual commentary, taking offense at its lack of political correctness. We could explore what we can learn from the European desire to integrate consumption and brand values messages into a cohesive editorial statement. But that requires an intellectual, thoughtful approach to fashion and our consumption patterns."
Anyhow, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I would love to hear yours.  As long as it's civilized and not from an Anonymous account, that is.

Wearing: Calista Marion biker jacket in pink, Forever New grey zipper top, Mash NY liquorice leggings, vintage pink tweed heels with a red platform, Boyy SYD bag

Okay, let's just talk about this whole Essence magazine issue for a second here, alright? Elliana Placas is a white woman who has been anointed fashion director at a magazine who's main focus is to foster the work of talented black women in fashion; stylists, photogs, writers, etc. Consequently, there was a shitload of backlash. Thanks in no small part to Michaela Angela Davis, former EIC of Honey magazine and an Essence contributor at present.  This is what she had to say:

“It’s with a heavy heart I’ve learned Essence Magazine has engaged a white Fashion director. I love Essence and I love fashion. I hate this news and this feeling. It hurts, literally. The fashion industry has historically been so hostile to black people – especially women. That 1 seat reserved for black women once held by Susan Taylor, Ionia Dunn Lee, Harriette Cole (+ me) is now – I can’t. It’s a dark day for me. How do you feel?”

Now, as expected, everybody just lost it a little bit after this. A large chunk of the people claimed that a magazine that was predominantly created to kind of give black women the platform to be involved in fashion that they are otherwise denied is being ridiculous by hiring a white woman, thus defeating the purpose. Fair enough.

The other side is retorting by saying that picking and choosing professionals at a magazine according to race is a hypocrisy, an inverse racism of sorts. And that if a magazine had picked only white models or stylists or writers, it would be a much bigger issue. Agreed.

But isn't that what's happening? Aren't a lot of magazines only featuring white models, using white stylists, etc.? I'm not generalizing here, before the shit hits the fan. So I feel as if their points are somewhat valid. Black women have had a history of being secluded by the fashion industry so it comes as no surprise that they're slightly defensive.

I'm going to be updating super soon but I don't even have half a second right now.

Talk soon!
